With a wide range of interesting attractions, culinary prowess, and lively nightlife, Nairobi is undoubtedly the jewel of East Africa. The city is teeming with fanciful places to grab delicious meals – thanks to the flourishing diversity of the traditional and continental cuisine. You can experience the pop-up dining, ‘naked' pizza, urban eating and a healthy edge in its range of multicultural restaurants.

In fact, the only thing that can make your visit to Nairobi even better is ending up at one of its awesome restaurants. Whether you’re looking for Italian, Indian, Mexican or even African dishes, Nairobi definitely has something that will exceed your expectations. These 10 best restaurants in Nairobi won’t let you down; you’ll be anything but hungry during your stay.

1. The Talisman Restaurant

A preview of what can be expected from The Talisman

Even the New York Times has named Talisman as the best restaurant in Nairobi. The Kenyan craft and Middle Eastern tapestry make up the interior, and the candle-lit al fresco dining is unrivalled. Continental menu extends from Zanzibar to Japan, Mombasa to Limuru

We recommend you start with a deluxe burger with apple slaw or feta, and coriander samosas dipped in chilli-ginger jam.

Address: 320 Ngong Rd, Nairobi, Kenya

When thinking about the best restaurants in Nairobi, About Thyme Restaurant should be at the front of your mind. The restaurant is known for serving delicious continental dishes in an intimate setting. Dine in the "down thyme garden" decked with pixie lights and comfortable couch seating arrangement.

And the food? You’ll be surprised at the variety of delicious meals served here such as Pumpkin & Amaretti Tortellini, Mushroom & Asparagus Crepes, Traditional Greek Moussaka, and Chicken Pot Pie.

Seafood Delights at Tamirind

Tamarind is a favourite for people who love great seafood in Nairobi. The restaurant is elegant and inviting with sweet aromas flowing from the kitchen. You are offered continental and local meat and seafood dishes. Jumbo prawns and deep-fried crab claws are favourites here. With a cold glass of sauvignon blanc, you can either go for the seafood or the vegetarian selections.

Tamarind holds a special place in my heart. It is located in a picturesque area of Karen; don’t forget to check this place out if you’re in the area.

Address: Karen Blixen Coffee Garden, Nairobi, Kenya

4. J's Fresh Bar & Kitchen

J’s Fresh Bar and Kitchen has two locations in Nairobi – Westlands and Karen. My friend and I visited the restaurant in Westlands. The environment is cosy and laid back with its minimalist wooden interiors and a well-stocked bar.

The background sound from the in-house DJ makes J's Fresh bar a magical place to eat battered fish and chips, Szechuan-peppered squid with roasted garlic aioli and smoked paprika scotch eggs.

Address: Address: Muthangari Dr, Westlands | Inside Calabash, Ngong Rd, Karen

5. Misono Japanese Restaurant

When we say that Nairobi is complete in its cuisine selection, a place like Miscono confirms it with its Japanese menus. Situated on Ngong Road and run by a family, the restaurant specializes in an indulgent and sophisticated dining experience.

It is either you relax airy dining place on the first floor decorated with Teppanyaki tables, or the refined and elegant dining space upstairs. The secret menu is the local lobster that is featured on its six-course Teppanyaki menu.

Address: Ngong Rd, Nairobi, Kenya

6. Hashmi’s BBQ

Hashmi is an Indian BBQ joint situated in the heart of Westlands, within UKay Complex. If you love Indian dishes, this is your spot. The restaurant is known for having incredible Khima Chapatti – chicken or Mutton mince mixed with eggs & shallow fried pastry. Yummy! Their Fish Tikka with Fiery Poussin Chips and Chooza Chicken with sauce are popular items on their menu. With their deliciously spicy foods, Hashmi BBQ is not for the fainthearted. Don’t know about you, I love deliciously spicy foods

The interior is simple and the meals are affordable. The restaurant is usually busy during the weekends.

Nielsen and the other staff at the restaurant will ensure that your dining experience is like no other. Even if you’ve never had a Thai food before, you are sure to enjoy yourself!

8. Tatu Steakhouse

Tatu Steakhouse is for those who love seafood and grilled local Angus beef. It is beautifully located at Fairmont the Norfolk Hotel. Tatu has a great atmosphere and a wide selection of wine and drink. Enjoy their Ostrich steak and chunky fries with a cold Tusker beer. But, if you’re not a ‘beer’ person, you can choose one of their tasty cocktails.
