10 Shopping Spots in Dar es Salaam

Shopping centres are one of the facilities to look out for in any major city. Even as a visitor, you would want to know where to get needed items in a comfortable manner and of course at reasonable prices. Dar es Salaam is a shopaholics' mecca for all things fashion, arts & crafts, food and more. From shopping malls to local markets, here are some amazing spots to shop ‘til you drop in Dar:

1. Mlimani City Mall

Renowned as the first indoor air-conditioned mall in the capital city of Tanzania and it also stands as one of the largest shopping spots in Dar es Salaam. Opened in 2006, it introduced many new stores, restaurants and even banks within its vast architecture. You would find favourite points such KFC, Pizza Hut and Mary Browns right in the mall. There is also a cinema – Century Cinemax.

2. Slipway Shopping Center

Located next to the ocean, you can get amazing views as you enjoy a meal in one of the open-air restaurants or bars close to the beach. The shopping centre is a nice mix of a local market with a mix of the luxury of a supermarket. You will find many cultural shops selling Tanzanian artworks as well as bookstores.

3. Oyster Bay Shopping Centre

Surrounded by the tranquil ambiance of a garden courtyard, this small shopping center provides you with original Tanzania craft shops where you can purchase original sculptures and other artefacts. They also hold periodic trade fairs and there are some restaurants such as the Sala Thai which serves nice cuisines.  

4. Mkuki House

This is a well-planned out mall with a variety of shops. Located in the city center, it is a great place to get some quick shopping done. You can find a delightful play area for kids to be entertained with fun activities like the bouncy castle. There is also a supermarket, a cinema, a men's fashion store and Pizza Hut.  They have a large parking area for cars.

5. J. M. Mall

One of Tanzania’s oldest malls with a nice ocean view, J.M. Mall offers shopping centers and other services which include banking, offices for tour operators, a casino as well as a hotel. The Grand Restaurant is one of the popular places to grab a great meal at the mall.

6. Aura Mall

Aura Mall is one of the new upcoming malls in Dar es Salaam with some parts of it still under construction. It is notcrowded as expected. The architecture is breath-taking with lovely designed interiors. At present, a supermarket, clothing stores, pharmacy and the cinema are already in operation. The mall has been built to accommodate people on wheelchair.

7. China Plaza

When you are looking to buy a specific product like a phone, it is important to know the exact place to get the best and where you can also find a variety of options to choose from. At this plaza formerly known as the Mobile Plaza, you will find a wide selection of phones and you can also get a repair work done on your work. There are also other services such as a cosmetics shop and a bank.

8. Quality Centre Mall

The Quality Centre Mall is the largest shopping mall with central air-conditioning in Dar. The mall features a wide range of stores, restaurants, banking and healthcare services as well as a range of entertainment options. If you are looking to buy some great jewellery for yourself or as a gift, this is a great place to stop by. You will not only jewellery but also nice watches, exotic fragrance, lovely pens and unique handbags. You should check out FahimAyaz luxury retail store for unique and customized Tanzanite jewellery.

9. Diamond Plaza

It is one of the new plazas sprouting up in the city. It has a nice collection of stores offering various services and products including furniture, clothing, technological appliances, travel agencies, and restaurants. The 8-storey low rise building strategically meets the shopping needs of delegates who attend conferences at the Julius Nyerere Convention Center within close proximity.

10. Kariakoo Market

This is a popular market in the city where you can find just about anything. There is the busy green section where fresh veggies and fruits are sold and there are other shops lined along the busy roads of the market displaying wares ranging from electronics to automobile parts, clothing, cosmetics and even a spot to trade/buy second-hand vehicles. You will also find entertainment spots such hotels and bars and street restaurants selling local cuisines.
