A Half Day Adventure Showing off some Zanzibari Wildlife and History

About the tour

Welcome to Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, originally built to house rebel prisoners from the mainland. It was later used as a quarantine station sheltering the mainland from epidemics.

The half-day tour to this conservation area will introduce you to the large colony of giant tortoise imported from Seychelles in the late 19th century and an opportunity to indulge in snorkelling, relax and unwind on white sands.

Highlights:

  • Take a boat from the shores of Stone Town to the beautiful Prison Island and see the endangered Aldabra Tortoises – babies and juveniles as well as the fully-grown, which are as old as 180 years.
  • Get a chance to see a colony of beautiful peacocks and take some photos.
  • Take a tour of the historic prison that once held rebellious slaves, but later used as a quarantine site
  • Go for a snorkel in the crystal clear waters after exploring the island and discover the marine life in the underwater world.
  • Relax and unwind under the warm glow of the sun on the white sands before heading back to Stone Town.
  • On your sail back, enjoy some tropical fruits with a natural sweet flavour that will make your journey more memorable.
