Chalbi Desert

Chalbi which means ‘bare and salty’ and the desert is the aridest and hottest region in Kenya. The desert spreads over an area of 100,000 square kilometres of flat sandy desert, located east of Lake Turkana. The desert is a pan completely surrounded by ancient lava flows and volcanoes. Only selected vegetation and animals are found here. There’s a village of Kalacha at the northern end of the desert, and it’s inhabited by the people of Gabbra.

Samburu National Reserve: Situated at the southeastern corner of Samburu District in the Rift Valley Province and bordered by Ewaso Nyiro River to the south, this reserve offers an abundance of wildlife especially the rate northern specialist species including Somali Ostrich, Gerenuk, Grevy Zebra, Beisa Oryx and Reticulated Giraffe. You’ll also see a large population of elephants and large predators such as Leopard, Lion and Cheetah.

Lake Turkana Festival 

This festival takes place annually in a small town called Loiyangalani, located on the south-eastern coast of Lake Turkana. The event has become one of the most popular attractions in Northern Kenya, attracting a large number of tourists to the cultural experience.

Kalacha

Chalbi desert may be hot and arid, but Kalacha is a perfect place to enjoy the magical surrounding with its oasis with mature doum palms and acacia forests.

  1. There are pans of salt in the desert which many pastoralists pick and use as a natural animals’ saltlick.
  2. The desert is believed to have been a lake that dried up a thousand years ago, therefore, the name Chalbi, which means 'bare and salty' in the Gabbra dialect.
  3. The southern part of the desert is home to the Rendille while the eastern part towards the Ethiopian border is home to the Gabbra people.
  4. Lake Turkana, the largest desert lake in Kenya, is part of Chalbi desert.
