Visit Mkomazi National Park, Tanzania

An untouched breathtaking beauty exhibiting unique natural treasures, an immense sense of space and a much-needed bridge between the northern circuit and coastal attractions, Mkomazi National Park is a true Sahel jewel.

Covering an area of 3,245km², Mkomazi is a magnificent northern Tanzania park that features rare wildlife species, spectacular mountains peaks, exotic landscapes, and vegetation.

Wildlife

Typical of the arid nyika are animals such as the giraffe, oryx, gerenuk, hartebeest, lesser kudu, eland, impala and Grant's gazelle, elephant, buffalo, and numerous predators, including lion, leopard, and cheetah. The endangered African Wild dog and Black rhino have also been re-introduced.

Bird Watching

With over 400 species of birdlife including the doves, hornbills, weavers and guinea-fowl as well as striking species of the martial eagle and violet wood-hoopoe, birding in Mkomazi is good. Also watch out for cobalt, chested vulturine, guinea fowl, ostrich, kori bustard, secretary bird and the migratory Eurasian roller!.

Scenic Safari

Bordered by Mount Kilimanjaro and other peaks, The Mkomazi National Park is a spectacular wilderness with a scenic appeal forming one of the largest and most important protected ecosystems on earth.

Exotic Vegetation

For a southern tip of the Sahel zone, Mkomazi is a classic dry-country reserve of grey-green scrubby bushes, ancient baobab trees, and isolated rocky hills. You can take a stroll along the seas of the bush to the Savannah woodlands and shallow valleys of grassland.

78 species of mammals have been recorded in Mkomazi. You can spot the endangered African wild dog from anywhere in the park. Catch a glimpse of the black rhino at the fenced sanctuary.

Camping

Mkomazi National Park is very exclusive and doesn't get crowded making the lovely tented camp a perfect getaway for safari lovers.

Sightseeing

Although Mkomazi doesn't offer as much wildlife viewing when compared to other parks in Tanzania, the wild scenery compensates for it with mountains rising in every direction.

Walking Safari

Join the thousands of people who pass within a few kilometres of Mkomazi and discover the treasures of this wedge of hilly semi-arid savannah – home of large herds of giraffe, eland, hartebeest, zebra, buffalo, and elephant.
