Ruaha National Park - Tanzania

What’s the best-kept secret in Tanzania? The answer: Ruaha National Park! With a huge variety of animals including sable and roan antelopes, giraffe, hippos, greater kudu, wild dogs, all the big cats, and elephants galore.

Add a great variety of striking landscapes, from rolling hills with giant baobabs, down to dusty dry riverbeds, across wide-open grassy plains towards swamps, hot springs, and forests that give way to bush scrub and rocky outcrops. Keep your binoculars ready for one of the 526 different bird species that have been recorded in this incredible national park.

What really makes Ruaha stand out from the crowd is that there are no crowds. Safari in a true wilderness and you will most likely not see many other visitors.  Take the option to go for a guided walk through genuinely untamed Africa.

Ruaha is the closest you'll get to a private, massive park, a unique chance for an authentic safari experience. Ruaha will make you want to come back again and again.

About Ruaha National Park

Ruaha National Park is roughly in the center of Tanzania, 120 km west of the city of Iringa. It is Tanzania’s largest national park with 20,226 square kilometres.

When the southern section of the Saba Game Reserve was gazetted in 1964, Ruaha National Park was formed. Recently, in 2008, the Usangu game reserve and important wetland areas were incorporated into the park, making it one of the largest in Africa.

Main Attractions

Ruaha is a relatively unknown gem in Tanzania, waiting to be discovered. Ruaha’s main attractions are:

  • Low density of tourists versus high density of animals
  • The thrill of going on a walking safari
  • Excellent bird watching
  • Stargazing under the beautiful night sky!

Huge variety of animals with very few visitors

Ruaha NP boasts a large variety of animals, and apart from missing the rhino it has excellent sightings of all the other members of the Big 5, even the leopard is regularly spotted. And the best thing is there are not a lot of other tourists to be seen, so most of the time you and your guide will be the only ones enjoying whatever it is you have spotted.

Walking safaris in Ruaha NP

It is possible to do walking safaris in Ruaha NP with some of the lodges. It is a great way to get more intimate with the bush and test your tracking skills. Learn about bush skills, tracks, poos and the flora and fauna you will see on your walk from your guide. It is a totally different experience and one that should not be missed.

Bird watching in Ruaha NP

Ruaha NP is an amazing playground for any animal lover, but the serious twitcher, or bird watcher, can spend weeks here to discover all that Ruaha NP has to offer. And with more than 520 birds, there is a lot on offer. How many will you spot?

Information for visitors
