Customs

East Africa’s countries have customs rules and regulations similar to those in many countries worldwide. A broad guide as to what to expect is presented below.

All travellers are encouraged to consult the necessary authorities’ websites for detailed information and procedures if they are in any doubt.

Tanzanian Customs

Import regulations:

Anyone 19 years of age or older can take into the country tax free:

  • Up to 200 cigarettes OR 250 grams of tobacco OR 50 cigars
  • 1 bottle of alcoholic beverage
  • 580mm of perfume
  • Personal effects

Firearms and Ammunition:

  • Not permitted without the necessary permit from the police obtained in advance

Flora and Fauna:

  • As a general rule, do not bring in any fresh or processed plant or food stuff.
  • Fruit, poultry meat and products are NOT permitted
  • It is possible to obtain permits to take certain plant and fresh products into the country, but these will require the necessary documentation at source and the necessary permits from the relevant authorities.

Pets

  • Veterinary certificates at source are required and there is a quarantine period.

Currency

  • Foreign currency: there is no limit on the amount of foreign currency allowed to be taken into the country by either residents or non-residents
  • Local currency: non-residents are not permitted to bring local currency (TZs) into Tanzania upon their arrival. Residents of Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda may take local (TZs) into Tanzania but only up to the amount they’re able to show they previously exported.

Baggage

  • All baggage is cleared at the first airport of entry to the country.

Kenyan Customs

Import regulations:

Anyone 16 years of age or older can take into the country tax free:

Pets

Import permit is required for cats and dogs.

  • Veterinary certificates issued at source for good health and valid rabies (administered at least 1 month previously and no longer than 1 year) are required.
  • All other animals are not considered pets and can only be imported as consigned cargo.

Currency

  • Foreign currency: there is no limit on the amount of foreign currency allowed to be taken into or out of the country by either residents or non-residents. For amounts equal to and greater than $5000USD documents indicating the source and the proposed use of the currency must be held.
  • Local currency: Residents may import a maximum of KES 500 000.00 to cover their expenses on re-entry.
  • Residents may export a maximum of KES 500 000.00 to cover their re-entry expenses.

Baggage

  • All baggage is cleared at the first airport of entry to the country.
