Nairobi International Airport

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, also known by its IATA Code NBO and ICAO Code HKJK, is the largest and busiest international airport in Kenya. It is the gateway to Kenya (9th busiest in Africa) and was named after the founding father and first president of the Republic of Kenya Jomo Kenyatta.

This is Kenya’s first international airport and gateway to over 50 countries. It is the hub for Kenya Airways and is a big, modern international airport, it is jam packed with all the facilities and conveniences that you would expect from any international airport in the world.

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is located in Nairobi City, Kenya’s administrative and economic capital, which in turn is located in Nairobi County. The word Nairobi is a Maasai word which means the place of cool waters.

Nairobi City is located adjacent to the Eastern Rift Valley. The location of the airport is in the Embakasi sub county, some 15 kilometers Southeast of the City’s Central Financial District.

Getting Here

  • Taxi – The following taxis are available; Kenatco Taxis, Uber, Unbranded Taxis. The rides from the City Centre to the airport, a 15 kilometers (25 minutes ride depending on traffic), are charged at an average of 1000 Kshs (USD $ 10) per trip.
  • Preferred Mode –  Use Uber and Kenatco Taxis they are more reliable.
  • Shuttle Bus – The airport does not operate one but there are Citi Hoppa shuttles which charge 50 Kshs (USD $ 0.5).
  • Alternatives – There are public passenger transport vehicles, known locally as matatus, which ply the A104 Mombasa Road their stand is located right within the airport at Units 1 and 2. This option is not for the faint hearted nor for the first time traveller.
  • Car Parking & Fees – There is an automated POS parking and charges are as follows for a saloon car entering the airport;
    • Minimum 15 minutes - 100 Kshs ($ 1 ).

    • Long-term parking (12-24 hours) - 650 Kshs (6.5$)

    • Extended parking - 1,500Kshs ($ 15) per day.

This is the hub and main airport of entry  into the Republic of Kenya. NBO boasts of 5 terminals servicing both domestic and international airlines.

Airlines Using As Hub

This airport is the hub for Kenya Airways, Jambojet, Fly540 and African Express Airways.

The taxis and car hire vehicles will pick and drop you within the terminal, right at the entrance to the departure lounge, and there are uniformed porters (with yellow numbered aprons) ready to help you with your luggage, for a small tip.

  • Kiosks – There are several kiosks that sell curios at all the airport terminals in addition to the duty free shops that stock western goods. There is plenty of reading material to keep you busy after you land.

Hotels & Transit Accommodation

There is no hotel in the airport. But there are several hotels located on the highway to the city and within the city. Most offer Wi-Fi, flat panel TVs, spas and gyms. Most are also located within walking distance to malls. The best include; Hilton Hotel Nairobi, Villa Rosa Kempinski and the Hotel Ambassadeur Nairobi.
