Distance and Flight Time

Departing Arusha Airport you will need to either travel to one of the popular hub airports Kilimanjaro or Dar es Salaam and then catch a connecting flight from there to Pemba Island. Your flight can take anywhere between 2 - 3 hours to get to Pemba Island.

If you prefer to get a better lay of the land you can also travel by car or bus for 358kms until you reach the cost and then take a ferry 80 km off the coast route and enjoy some of the greatest ocean and island views in the world.

Not to Miss During Flights

Catch a glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro as you leave the North of Tanzania and head across the country to the east coast. Once you reach the coast you will then need to cross the Zanzibar channel, your pilot will have the nose of the plane pointed slightly south of east, headed for Pemba’s capital Chake-Chake and it’s close to the airport of Wawe, Karume or Pemba - one place, many names.

This is a flight of colours, textures, sea, sky, beach, coral, rock and green hills. Take one deep breath, close your eyes and imagine the artist’s palette and colour choices. Your camera should be clicking away.

Your approach to the airfield usually requires a left-hand turn line up, and then you’re down.

Airport & Layover Tips

Explore Tanzania's smaller Island airport also known as the Pemba Island Aiport that services hundreds of domestic and travellers each week. There is no shortage of travel alternatives when leaving the airport with a range of rental car agencies, cabs, buses, shuttles all just a call away. Baggage retrieval is a simple affair while your prearranged transfer/pick-up should be easily found.
