Arusha airport lies 500 km (311 miles) from Zanzibar’s Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. The average flying time from Zanzibar to Arusha is around 1 hour and 25 minutes from the airport to airport. There are regular direct flights offered on this route by ZanAir, Precision Air & Coastal Aviation.
If you prefer to get a better lay of the land you can also travel by ferry from Zanzibar to Dar Es Salaam and then by road by hiring a car or booking a bus, travelling by road you will have to cover around 714 kilometres which should take you just under 14 hours and 53 minutes to complete.
Not to Miss During Flights
Whether taking off to the north or the south, you’ll have great opportunity to see the island from the air, the Indian ocean, the dhows plying their trade, most probably the ferry making its mainland/islands run, and the beautiful Tanzanian mainland beaches.
Once headed north-west, pointing at Arusha, Pemba Island will be visible from the right-hand side of the plane. The route crosses onto the mainland south of the town of Pangani, historically significant due to its Arabic influence and the British and German colonial dominance.
Flying off to the left of the East Usambara Mountains, the vast plains of Kenya’ Tsavo West National Park is often visible in the distance. On your approach and line up for Arusha airport, Africa’s most famous Mount Kilimanjaro, the world’s highest free-standing peak should be easily visible off the nose of the plane.
